The revised edition of the book, Philippine History, highlighted more details and insights about the remote and recent past interlinked with the various aspects of the country’s development in transition. Research materials, review articles, seminar papers, and published texts were considered in the preparation of this book.

This venture is a response to varied comments from the academic community and interested readers that there is a need to update the writing of a textbook in history as well as to make it more comprehensible and relevant to the needs of the new generation. In time, the claims and controversies of some accounts in history have to verify and understand to reveal historical truths and dismiss mythical information gathered unintentionally in the past.

People do remember things that are important. It cannot be denied that modern technology and civic order are vital to meet the country’s progress. But as Dr. Jose P. Rizal once wrote in his essay, The Philippines A Century Hence, “If you want to foretell the destiny of the Filipino people, study the pages of the book that tells of their past.”

The author wishes to thank the Almighty God for the blessings and guidance He has given her. From the Blessed Mother, she fi nds comfort in trying times and happy moments.

For the realization of this venture, she would like to express her sincerest gratitude to the following authors whose works were referred to in the text: Dr. Sonia Zaide, Professor Renato Constantino, Professor Teodoro Agoncillo, Professor Milagros Guerrero, Dr. William Henry Scott, Dr. Raymundo Punongbayan, and Mr. Hector Santos, as well as to New Day Publishers for allowing her to include in this book, the topic about the Code of Kalantiaw.

Special thanks to Atty. Pantaleon Dumlao and Mrs. Liberty Santos-Dumlao for providing some data materials about World War II and to the late Ms. Julita Javier, former librarian of the Bulacan State University (BSU) Graduate School, as well as to Dean Ray Naguit of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy of Bulacan State University who shared insights about the fi rst book edition.

This book would not have been possible without the invaluable support of Mr. Angel Recto and Mr. Daniel Ortega. Particularly, deepest thanks to Mr. Mark Angelo A. Roque who has given encouragement and has generously offered helpful suggestions and updated sources in history.

Special mention is given to her relatives and friends particularly Mr. Ricardo Capule, Mrs. Mary Mayoyo, Dr. Dolorita del Rosario, Mrs. Josefi na Ochoa, Mrs. Jessica Chosas, Mrs. Marissa Enriquez and Mrs. Helen Baesa for their invaluable help in various ways. To colleagues for their appreciation and trust, and to students, in their quest for better understanding of the nation’s history, the author is truly grateful.

Finally, to her parents, Mr. Romeo Serapio Halili and Atty. Lolita Nadong-Halili; her brothers, Antonio and Frederick; her sisters, Annabelle and Merhama; and her nieces, Maria Chona H. Delicana and Katherine M. Halili for their inspiration and prayers. The author is forever thankful and she dedicates this book to them.
