Justice Romeo J. Callejo, Sr.(ret.)

Chairperson, Judicial Integrity Board

"The complexities of Philippine penal laws coupled with   the   ever-changing   landscape   of   criminal   jurisprudence   necessitate a reference on the subject matter penned by an authority of unquestionable competence and expertise.

To say that the author of this work, the Honorable Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta, is one such authority is an understatement.

His years of teaching and of public service-as prosecutor, as trial court judge, as member of the Sandiganbayan and of the Supreme Court,   and,   ultimately,   as   Chief   Justice–combined,   with   his   outstanding legal acumen and his characteristic determination has led Chief Justice Peralta to acquire an exceptional mastery of the substantive and procedural laws in criminal law, making him an expert of high regard on the subject matter. He has now distilled the knowledge and insights drawn from his almost four decades of legal practice and presented them in this book, Essentials in Criminal Law.“

Senator Franklin M. Drilon

Senate Minority Leader, Republic of the Philippines

"The publication of Essentials in Criminal Law is a boon to the professional and ethical mandate of lawyers. The rapid developments in Criminal Law pose a challenge to the members of the bench and the bar, and even to professors of law and their students. This book captures not only the recent developments in our penal statutes and jurisprudence but also offers a nuanced understanding of Criminal Law’s finer points that elude even the most seasoned among lawyers. The author’s career – as a prosecutor, magistrate and now, and head of the Judiciary – reflects brightly on each page of this work.

We profusely thank Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta for imparting his entire life’s knowledge of Criminal Law to everyone, especially to those who have longed for it over the years.”
