Corrections, the fourth pillar of the Criminal Justice System, has two major and equally significant components: Institutional-Based Corrections and Community-Based Corrections. Three departments of the executive branch of the government are implementing both: the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Institutional Corrections is one of the subjects in Correctional Administration under Criminology. Handbook on Institutional Corrections discusses the major processes in the corrections system being undertaken by the Corrections Pillar of our Criminal Justice System.

The book discuss the mandates, jurisdiction, powers and functions, duties and responsibilities, mission and vision, historical background, and organizational setup of every members of the correctional institution – the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other law enforcement agencies manning detention centers and facilities; the DSWD that supervises the Aftercare and Counseling Institutions, and Rehabilitation Centers for Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL); the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and the Provincial Jails that manage inmates who are undergoing investigation, awaiting or undergoing trial, awaiting final judgment, and those who are convicted and sentence with imprisonment of up to three years; and the Bureau of Correctionthe national prisoners.

Also included are the outline of the salient provisions of the PNP Operational Procedure 2010, BJMP Manual Revised 2007, and the Standard Operating Manual of the Bureau of Corrections – the procedures, rules and regulation, policies and guidelines in dealing with inmates, for the ready reference of every student of criminology and even uniformed members/personnel of the correctional institution.

Through this humble work, it is the author’s aim to impart the knowledge and experiences she acquired from her actual involvement in the field of corrections to criminology students as well as help motivate those who are preparing for the Criminologist Board Examination, hoping for them to pass the board exam and
soon join the law enforcement profession.
