According to the assessment guide published by edutopia.org, asking students to demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter is critical to the learning process; it is essential to evaluate whether the educational goals and standards of the lessons are being met.
With this in mind, Rex Book Store continuously looks for ways not only to help learners learn new things and assist teachers measure these learning; but, more importantly, to provide the right kind of tools so these learning are effectively assessed.
This school year, Rex Book Store launches the 21C Performance Task Booklet—a compilation of authentic performance tasks aligned to different 21st century skills, literacies, global themes, and performance standards which come with task sheets and rubric for scoring/grading purposes.
This project is in line with the Department of Education’s policy guidelines on classroom assessment for the K to 12 Basic Education Program (DepEd Order no. 8, s. 2015), emphasizing the importance of performance tasks in student learning. Its objectives are as follows:
1. Involve students in the learning process individually or in collaboration with teammates over a period of time
2. Give students opportunities to demonstrate and integrate their knowledge, understanding, and skills about topics or lessons learned in a specific real-life situation by performing and/or producing evidence of their learning
3. Give students the freedom to express their learning in appropriate and diverse ways
4. Encourage student inquiry, integration of knowledge, understanding, and skills in various contexts beyond the assessment period
How To Use:
The 21C Performance Task Booklet covers the five major subjects—Math, English, Science, Filipino, and Araling Panlipunan—starting from Grade 1 all the way to Grade 10.
Each booklet contains a number of performance tasks that require an output. All tasks are accompanied by task sheets that are either used by an individual student or by groups of students.
The booklet is a stand-alone material based on the learning competencies prescribed in the DepEd curriculum guide, not on any particular book title.
Each performance task guarantees provision for:
a. Vertical-Horizontal Integration
b. Use of Technology
c. Collaborative and Independent Tasks
d. Differentiated Activities
All Performance Tasks contain the following elements:
a. Title of the Project – a creative heading for the particular Performance Task
b. Interdisciplinary Links – enumeration of subjects or disciplines which can be utilized to help accomplish the desired output
c. Description – a brief overview of the whole project covering both the mini tasks and the major task
d. Objectives – a list of learning competencies being addressed by the tasks and activities
e. 21st Century Skills Matrix – a table showing a list of 21st century skills and a brief description of how each task (mini and major) tackles the said competencies
f. Notes to the Teacher – a list of instructions that direct the teacher in executing the tasks and activities
g. Rubrics – standards or criteria in scoring each task
